Health Coaching Certification Practice Test 2026 - Free Health Coach Exam Practice Questions and Study Guide

When a client misses a session or falls short of adherence targets, the best approach is to engage in collaborative problem-solving that preserves the relationship and keeps progress moving. This means exploring the barriers the client faced in a nonjudgmental way, then adjusting the plan to fit their real-life circumstances. By identifying concrete obstacles—whether scheduling conflicts, unclear or overwhelming goals, competing priorities, or access issues—you can tailor the coaching steps to be more realistic and doable. Reaffirming your support helps maintain motivation and trust, while setting realistic next steps provides a clear path forward. Re-engaging with a concrete plan and a new appointment keeps momentum and accountability intact.

This approach is more effective than blaming the client, which can undermine motivation and rapport; ignoring the missed session, which misses an opportunity to understand and address barriers; or canceling future sessions, which ends the collaborative process and halts progress.
